Muhaiminul Islam is currently a Graduate Research Assistant and first-year PhD student in Biological and Agricultural Engineering at the University of Georgia, where he works under the supervision of Dr. Md Sultan Mahmud in the Precision Crop Protection Lab. His research integrates autonomous robotics, computer vision, artificial intelligence, and precision agriculture to develop intelligent field-monitoring systems for specialty crop production.
Before joining the University of Georgia, Muhaiminul completed both his Bachelor’s and master’s degrees in Robotics and Mechatronics Engineering at the University of Dhaka. During this period, he worked for two years as a Research Assistant in AVIS Lab under the guidance of Dr. Md Mehedi Hasan. His earlier research focused on agricultural computer vision, wheat phenotyping, crop monitoring, plant disease detection, and seedling growth-stage classification using deep learning and feature engineering-based approaches.
His research contributions have resulted in peer-reviewed publications in recognized journals such as Plant Methods, Frontiers in Plant Science, and Smart Agricultural Technology. His published works include AI-based plant disease recognition with recommendation support, improved wheat spike segmentation and detection from field images, and cotton seedling monitoring with growth-stage classification.
